Hi Bob,
absolutely stunning. I'll inform the egroup immediately. So from start to finish exactly how long did Kenya take bearing in mind I'm sure you said you'd put her to one side once? Wish I sailed on her now, did you ever do one of BI's/RFA's since 1970's Knights of the Round Table LSL's?
BR Fred
PS I served onboard Bedivere & Geraint. |

Hi Fred,
I began the model 17th April, 2009, but lost interest shortly after the hull was plated because I was having trouble finding certain info that was't clearly shown on the plans. I worked spasmodically on it as more info trickled in. In total, I worked 39 days on the model and the total building time has come out at exactly 83 hours.
I haven't done any RFAs, I don't really like grey-hulled ships as they tend to look a bit drab. Don't like white ones either for that matter because they are so difficult to keem clean during construction, but I seem to have managed OK with KENYA.

Hi Bob,
two entries from the BI egroup. If memory serves correctly without going there I'm sure there's a BI ship in amongst your models on this site. Let me know if you wish to contact the sender of the first mail. By the way can I assume when you said plating that the wooden hull is sheathed in metal?
BR Fred
What a splendid model. Congratulations to a very competent and dedicated modeler. Never having sailed on her or even seen her close up I can only presume that she is accurate. Well done.
If he ever thinks of turning his hand to the less glamorous ships of the fleet and it was a ship that I had sailed on then I may well consider a purchase.
and after explaining how to view Kenya
Thank you Fred, she looks bonny |

Hi Fred,
Thanks. The hull is wood, as you supposed, but the plating is no more than thin paper stuck on. No doubt I have made mistakes in the construction somewhere but, as you know, ships changed over their lifetimes, so it is impossible to get perfection, but I did build the model from plans of the actual ship obtained from The Shipping World journal, August 1951, and it is as accurate as I could make it. Other BI ships I have built are MULBERA and PACHUMBA.
We don't have waiting lists, as you know, it is just a matter of contacting us when the current project is complete. Further details, plus contact details, on our website that is in my profile here.
At the moment, we are involved in other activities for a few weeks.
